Renowned colourist Darren Mostyn shares how this key post-production role is evolving
Colour grading is a vital but little-known step in the filmmaking process. It changes how audiences respond to a scene, making them feel a setting’s warmth or chill, for instance, or particular emotions about what they see playing out there.
Like everything we do at Linney, it’s a role that’s changing fast. So we were delighted to welcome Darren Mostyn, Senior Colourist at Online Creative in Brighton, to show the impact and potential of today’s advanced colour correction tools.
Darren has worked in the broadcast industry for nearly 25 years, regularly colour grading for the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and various digital platforms. His recent work includes Liam Gallagher’s ‘Come Back To Me’ promo, directed by Nottingham’s own Shane Meadows.
In a recent film and animation forum, he showed how tasks that once took hours can now be done in just seconds using the latest software. And he asked what they mean for the colourist’s traditional role, and where we draw the line between automated efficiency and human finesse in an art form like film.
